FORT CALHOUN BAND IN CONCERT ON MARCH 4

The Fort Calhoun High School Band will present their annual Winter Concert on Tuesday evening, March 4, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.  The program includes an exciting collection of works by both American and European composers.  The opener will be “Contrasto Grosso,” the title being a play on the name of a common compositional structure from the Baroque era, by Belgian Jacob de Haan.  “Esprit de Corps” by Robert Jager was written for and commissioned by the United States Marine Corps and is a stirring work with strains of the “Marine’s Hymn” laced throughout.  “An American Elegy” was written as an expression of hope by Frank Ticheli in reflection on one of the tragic moments in our history.  Julie Giroux’s “Fort McHenry Suite,” written for concert band and narrator, commemorates the historic bombardment of that fort and the subsequent penning of our United States national anthem.  Mr. Mark Welsher will be the special guest narrator.  The program will also include “The Saint and the City,” a programmatic piece again by Jacob de Haan, and  will then conclude with the European march “Arsenal” by Jan Van der Roost from the Netherlands.

This outstanding collection of music should provide a wonderful evening of entertainment.  The Fort Calhoun High School Band is under the direction of Mr. Mark Jones, who reports that the Band has been playing very well in preparation for this challenging performance.  The general public is cordially invited to attend this free concert event.
