COURSE: Principles of Technology
AREA OF STUDY: Science
COURSE LENGTH: Two Semesters
COURSE TYPE: Elective
PREREQUISITE: Biology
GRADE AVAILABILITY: 10, 11 & 12
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In Principles of Technology, basic physics concepts from a system and technology point of view are introduced. There are four types of systems studied, including: mechanical, fluid, electrical, and thermal. Within those systems, the principles of force, rate, work, energy, resistance, and power and force transformers are studied and tested. Everyday applications of these systems are discussed, problems are worked out, and laboratory applications are tested. A unit on bridge design is used and balsa wood bridges are built and tested. Design technology is used on the iPad to show how engineers design bridges. A unit on robots has also been recently added. A field trip to the Florence Water Treatment Plant is taken at the end of the year to see how the principles that were studied are used in every day situations
