Our Building Construction students had the opportunity to tour the MCC Construction trailer. The students were able to see several different trades including sand topography mapping, 3D virtual modeling, welding, lighting, electrical, and plumbing. Anthony Curcio and Bradley Goodman, representing MCC, were there demonstrating and helping the students have hands-on experiences at each station. Thanks to MCC for this fun experience for our students.
The students at Fort Calhoun Elementary had a couple of opportunities this month to learn about fire safety. On October 9th, the Kindergarteners visited the Fort Calhoun Fire Station. They got to tour the station and even practiced using the fire hose with Dave Neumann and Jerry Mink. On October 16th the Fire Department visited the school. Grades Preschool through 3rd grade had the opportunity to tour the ambulance with Dave Neumann and Jackie Mapes. They also learned a lot about fire safety in their home from Deputy State Fire Marshall Alyssa Sanders and they practiced climbing out a window with a fire ladder in the Smoke Simulator Trailer. Grades 4th through 6th got to explore the fire trucks and practiced using a battery-operated fire extinguisher. Thanks to all who came to help with these events including Dave Neumann, Jerry Mink, Jackie Mapes, Jen Sundermeier, Dan Mallory, Devon Walentine and Deputy State Fire Marshal, Alyssa Sanders. For tips on fire prevention including home safety tips visit the State Fire Marshal’s website.https://sfm.nebraska.gov/fire-prevention

Chad Nixon and Jason Thomas were among the six speakers who came to share their experience and insights with Fort Calhoun sixth graders. Students took advantage of the opportunity to learn from individuals representing paramedic/firefighting, military service, surveying, architecture, and civil engineering careers. The sixth-grade students said it was a very interesting day. Mary Deason felt inspired by Mr. Thomas who spoke about a career in the military. She loved his quote “Anyone can be in the military but the military is not for everyone.” Kory Defoil got a lot of information from the day and said: “it filled us with knowledge.” Thank you to everyone who planned and presented for this event.
