COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is primarily a hands-on lab class providing students with training and performance experience in the specialized area of jazz, the only form of music which is truly American in origin. Brief lectures will cover the basics of style, performance techniques, chord structures, improvisation, as well as notable groups and performers in the field. This is a select, auditioned class and an elite performing ensemble. Membership is restricted to instrumentation used in standard jazz literature. The class meets Thursday mornings at 7:05 a.m., with other rehearsals and performances as scheduled throughout the season. Attendance at all functions is mandatory.
