We are 100 days brighter here at Fort Calhoun!
2020 Art After School
They are at it again! Ten 5th & 6th-grade students have been hard at work making masks from paper mache during the after school art program. The students were able to mold the masks with paper mache, then create their own design for the mask, and finally, use acrylic paint to make their pieces come to life.
Starting in February, the second session for 3rd and 4th-grade students will begin. Mr. High-horse and Mrs. Rutledge will have new and exciting projects to work on. There are a couple more spots available if anyone is still interested!

Girls in Engineering Day
Abigail Russell and Gina Namuth had a fun opportunity to participate in “Girls in Engineering Day” at UNL last weekend with Mrs. Shields. It was sponsored by UNL and the Lincoln Children’s Museum. It was a day for girls ages 7 to 18 to discover what engineers do. They explored hands-on activities and then had breakout sessions where more in-depth topics were discussed. They also were able to tour the UNL lab that is creating a surgical robot. Abigail Russell said she enjoyed learning about the different kinds of engineers and getting connected with professionals in the field.

Elementary Student Council Care Packages 2019
Being away from your family over the holidays is hard. Hopefully, these gifts from The Elementary Student Council will brighten the days of the troops who receive them. They are going to three local soldiers that are away from home for the holidays and other troops overseas. The students spoke at a Knights of Columbus meeting and an Auxiliary meeting to asked for donations from these organizations to help with funding. They were so generous and each donated $300. This helped us out tremendously as shipping per box is around $15. This is always a rewarding project that they have done for the past 3 years.
put their Military boxes together and will be shipping those out Friday.

Veterans Honored at Fort Calhoun High School
On Monday, November 11th, Fort Calhoun Community Schools honored our Veterans by having a Veteran’s Day Ceremony. The event was hosted by our Skills USA students with an introduction by Bailey Donovan and the MC and Skills President being Kate Hoefker. The High School Band and Choir both performed several patriotic songs including the Armed Forces Salute. Plus, the 4th-grade students performed a fun, patriotic light show presentation. The keynote speaker was Ltc. Julie L. Burmeister. Several service members from the Military were in attendance and enjoyed a luncheon prepared by the school kitchen staff and served by the Skills USA students. Thank you to everyone who helped with the event. Once again, Fort Calhoun Schools would like to thank all our Veterans for their service to our country.

2019 After School Art Program
Many 3rd through 6th-grade students got to be a part of our first ever after school art program and it was a blast! Students got to work on a variety of projects that included drawing, painting, and sculpting. During these art sessions, the students not only learned how to create their masterpieces, but also learned about the 7 elements of art, parts of the paintbrush, the different kinds of paint and materials used in art, just to name a few.
Pictured are the 5th and 6th-grade students with their elephant sculptures from the most recent art class. The next session for 5th and 6th grade will start in January, and the 3rd and 4th-grade session will begin in February. Mr. High Horse and Mrs. Rutledge will have a new set of activities for the students to create and enjoy. The PFE will send out more details when the time gets closer for the next session so be on the lookout!
